The Leopard 2 is equipped with a 120 mm cannon and is capable of firing high-velocity shells, enabling it to effectively penetrate most enemy armour. It has a very good active protection system, which can detect and neutralize enemy fire before it reaches the tank and injures the crew.

This German tank also features a wide range of reconnaissance and communications equipment, making it highly flexible and adaptable for most combat operations, on any type of terrain.

Leopard 2: its weak points

Although the Leopard 2 tank is considered one of the best battle tanks in the world, it also has a few weak points, including :

  • High cost: all these technologies make this a very expensive tank to produce, maintain and modernize, which can be an obstacle for countries looking to acquire it.
  • Its vulnerability: although the Leopard 2 is equipped with advanced ballistic protection, it can be vulnerable to certain modern weapons, such as anti-tank missiles and improvised explosive devices.
  • Maintenance: Although the Leopard 2 is reliable, it requires regular maintenance to maintain its high operational availability, which can be a challenge for some countries with insufficient resources.
  • Weight: The Leopard 2 is a heavy tank, weighing in at around 60 tonnes, which can pose logistical challenges for transport and rapid deployment on certain terrains.
  • Fuel consumption: Due to its size and weight, the Leopard 2 consumes a significant amount of fuel, which can reduce its range on the battlefield.
  • Obsolete technologies: Although the Leopard 2 has been modernized over the years, some of its technologies may be obsolete by modern standards, which can make it less effective against enemies using more advanced equipment.

Note: the advantages and disadvantages of a tank also depend on the operational context and tactics used on the battlefield.
