History and development of the Petzl brand

Founded in 1936, Petzl began manufacturing tools in 1967, gradually replacing ladders in caving. It wasn't until 1972 that Fernand Petzl created the very first headlamp for mountaineering and a binding for ski touring.

The company became a SARL in 1975, then moved to new premises in Crolles, near Grenoble in the Isère region. The following year, Petzl began manufacturing the first harnesses for caving and mountaineering. Each of the brand's products comes with instructions for use in the form of drawings and diagrams. In 2001, Petzl expanded its range of military headlamps with the highly successful Tikka (the first LED headlamp).
